Causes for Infertility in Women

Infertility is the inability of women to conceive and have a natural pregnancy. However, the reason for the same could be due to issues in the man or the woman. The process of conceiving, carrying a successful pregnancy and delivering a healthy baby is not that simple. Some of the common causes of infertility are as follows:

• 1. Ovulation:
  Ovulation is a process by which eggs are released from the ovaries which on fertilization by a sperm make a woman pregnant. However, some women do not have proper ovulation making it difficult to conceive.
• 2. Irregular or no menstrual cycle:
  Menstrual cycle is a mechanism by which unfertilized eggs are discarded from the body. This is also an indication that the woman has properly ovulated and is fertile. However, irregular periods caused by hormonal changes and other factors can make conceiving a difficult process.
• 3. Defect in structure of Reproductive system:
  In certain conditions, the fallopian tubes are blocked by cysts which make it difficult for the eggs to reach the sperms. Endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and polyps are other structural problems. Some women have an unusually shaped uterus that makes pregnancy difficult.
• 4. Failure of Egg implantation:
  In some cases, the eggs get fertilized but the walls of the uterus are not strong enough to carry out the entire pregnancy process which leads to a miscarriage or fertility.
• 5. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome:
  Commonly known as PCOS, it is one of the most common reasons for infertility. It is a condition where high levels of a type of hormone called androgens are produced by the adrenal glands. These hormones interfere with the ovulation process that affects pregnancy. This leads to the formation of fluid-filled sacs or cysts within the ovaries. Research shows that genetic or environmental factors lead to PCOS in women.
